Remarkably, at 27 years old, 399 emerged from the den in 2023 with a new cub of the year (COY), a record for the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Seeing this marvelous mother and reflecting on all that she represented was deeply moving. With Rowdy, she was playful, loving, and a wonderful teacher. Long-living and successful grizzly sows like 399 are important drivers of the health of the grizzly bear population. Grizzly 399 produced 18 offspring over her lifetime and her offspring have gone on to further her linage and become celebrities of their own.
