Remarkably, at 27 years old, 399 emerged from the den in 2023 with a new cub of the year (COY), a record for the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In this image, Grizzly 399 stands with her COY, “Rowdy” (or “Spirit”), taking in the sights and sounds of a light spring rain while foraging. Seeing this marvelous mother and reflecting on all that she represented was deeply moving. With Rowdy, she was playful, loving, and a wonderful teacher. Long-living and successful grizzly sows like 399 are important drivers of the health of the grizzly bear population. Grizzly 399 produced 18 offspring over her lifetime and her offspring have gone on to further her linage and become celebrities of their own. There are countless tales in the community of special moments in 399’s life, such as Grizzly 399 seen interacting with her adult children and playing with her grandchildren.
